Do you accept insurance?
For most, using health insurance coverage is one of the most preferred and cost-effective option to pay for mental health counseling services. However, there are pros and cons to using insurance to pay for mental health services.
Benefits to using your insurance:
- Reduced cost: Depending on your insurance plan, you might have to pay significantly less for therapy than a person who is paying out of pocket for the same service. Most people must pay a portion towards the total cost of the session, or a co-pay.
- Ease of accessibility to care: Most people cannot afford therapy without their insurance. Insurance may be the only avenue to access psychological services to obtain the care they need. Many insurance plans have a list of providers who accept their insurance, making the search for the best provider easier.
- Increased accountability: Insurance companies often require therapists to document progress notes and treatment plans, which can help ensure that therapy is effective and that you progress towards your treatment goals.
Drawback to using Your Insurance:
- Fewer options: Paying with insurance limited the selection of therapist and treatment options available. Your insurer might have fewer options of providers to choose from, making it time consuming to find a therapist you feel are most comfortable to work with through concerns.
- Fewer sessions: Let’s face it, insurance companies can do what they want. Insurance companies determine the length and the time it takes for the person to be free of their mental health concern. People are often placed at a disadvantage if their psychological condition needs enhanced therapeutic treatment options, or more sessions to resolve their psychological condition. The insurance company can look at your mental health record and determine if you have been helped and determine that you are no longer in need of services, leaving your treatment feeling stuck.
Privacy concerns: Using insurance means that you must disclose your personal information. Yea, insurance companies like to be all up in your business which limits privacy and confidentiality.
Diagnosis: You must be diagnosed with a mental health condition to receive coverage of services, which can be stigmatizing and affect future health coverage.
Finally, it is your choice to use insurance to pay for mental health services. Please consider what is the best option for you after you have weighed the benefits verse the risks.
Can I pay for services myself?
There are some benefits and risks to paying for services out of pocket.
Benefits:
Therapy done in a more flexible way: You’ll have access to wider range of treatment options. There is increase flexibility with scheduling, session length, and more tailored approach during treatment planning.
Greater privacy: Your insurer will not have access to your information, which means privacy and confidentiality. Often, insurance companies want you to have a diagnosis and access to personal information regarding your diagnosis, which impairs your rights to confidentiality.
More therapists to choose from: Paying out of pocket means you have the choice to work with whomever you choose, rather than the options your insurer provides or being limited to accepts your insurance. Ultimately, you have more control over who is the best fit for you.
The nice part of it all!!
No diagnosis required: Worried about being stigmatized because of your diagnosis? Well with private pay, or paying out of pocket, you do not need to have a diagnosis. Only insurance companies require a person to be diagnosis to receive benefits in the future.
Drawbacks:
Cost: Truth of the matter is that psychological services can be expensive especially if you require long-term therapy. The total cost of therapy is your responsibility.
Limited finances: Most people do not have the financial resources to off set the total cost of treatment, which limits treatment options.
Reimbursement for care: You will not qualify for insurance reimbursement via in-network or out of network care.
No accountability: Insurance companies oversee the care given to their insurer. There is less assurance that treatment by your provider will be effective.
Paying for your treatment is a decision that will be based on your circumstances and preferences. So, weigh your options carefully before considering if this is the best option for you.

Reimbursement for care- Superbill
*Superbill*
If you want to be reimbursed for paying for therapy sessions out of pocket. You can submit a superbill to your insurance provider. Out of network services might be covered by your health insurance.
A Superbill is a document that detail the services you receive for out of network services, such as a mental health counselor. This document includes the date of service, service codes, diagnosis codes, and the billed amount. Clients can use the super bill to request reimbursement from their health insurance provider.
The amount reimbursed depends on the individual's health care coverage for in or out of network services.
What should be included on a Superbill:
Provider Information: Therapist's name, NPI number, office location, contact details, and referring provider's information (if applicable).
Patient Information: Patient's name, address, phone number, and date of birth.
Service Details: Date of service, procedure code (CPT), diagnosis code (DX), modifiers (if any), units/minutes, and fees.
To request and submit a Superbill, most providers require you to ask for one. After obtaining it, contact your insurance company to understand your out-of-network benefits, the process for submitting a Superbill, and ensure your address is up-to-date on file.
Key questions to ask your insurance company:
What are my out-of-network healthcare benefits for behavioral health?
Is pre-authorization required?
What is the co-payment, deductible, co-insurance, and timely filing limit?
If pre-authorization is needed, initiate the process with your therapist's information.
After submitting a Superbill, it typically takes about 2 weeks for the insurance company to process it. If approved, they will send reimbursement. If not, contact them to inquire about the status and reasons for denial.
In case of denial, you can contact your employer's Human Resources Benefits Specialist to assist in resolving the issue.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy
A widely used form of psychotherapy that focuses on the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is based on the idea that our thoughts influence our feelings and behaviors, and that by changing our thoughts, we can change how we feel and act.
Here is how CBT typically works:
1. **Identification of negative thought patterns**: In CBT, the therapist helps the individual identify negative or distorted thought patterns that contribute to their emotional distress or problematic behaviors. These thoughts are often automatic and deeply ingrained.
2. **Challenging negative thoughts**: Once negative thought patterns are identified, the therapist helps the individual challenge these thoughts by examining the evidence for and against them. This process aims to replace irrational or unhelpful thoughts with more balanced and realistic ones.
3. **Behavioral strategies**: CBT also involves the development of behavioral strategies to help individuals change unhelpful behaviors that may be reinforcing negative thought patterns or contributing to their difficulties. This may involve setting specific goals, developing coping skills, or engaging in exposure therapy to confront fears or anxieties.
4. **Homework assignments**: In CBT, individuals are often given homework assignments to practice the skills they are learning in therapy and to apply them in real-life situations. This helps reinforce learning and facilitate lasting change.
5. **Monitoring progress**: Throughout the therapy process, individuals and therapists work together to monitor progress and make adjustments as needed. CBT is typically a structured and goal-oriented approach, with a focus on achieving specific outcomes within a relatively short period of time.
CBT has been shown to be effective in treating a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety disorders, phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and eating disorders. It is often used in combination with other therapeutic approaches or medications, depending on the individual's needs.
Overall, CBT is a practical and evidence-based therapy that helps individuals develop skills to manage their thoughts and emotions more effectively, leading to improved mental health and well-being.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
I use DBT interventions to address the client's symptoms.
A type of cognitive-behavioral therapy that was originally developed to treat individuals with borderline personality disorder. It has since been adapted for use with other mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and substance abuse.
DBT is based on the concept of dialectics, which refers to the idea that two seemingly opposing forces can be true at the same time. The therapy focuses on helping individuals build skills in four key areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.
1. Mindfulness: This involves being fully present in the moment and accepting your thoughts, feelings, and experiences without judgment. Mindfulness skills help individuals become more aware of their emotions and reactions.
2. Distress Tolerance: These skills help individuals cope with crises and intense emotions without making impulsive or harmful decisions. Techniques may include distraction, self-soothing activities, and improving the moment.
3. Emotion Regulation: This involves learning to identify and label emotions, understand the factors that contribute to emotional experiences, and develop strategies for managing and changing emotions in a healthy way.
4. Interpersonal Effectiveness: These skills focus on improving communication, setting boundaries, and building healthy relationships with others. Individuals learn how to assert their needs, say no, and navigate interpersonal conflicts effectively.
DBT is typically delivered in both individual therapy sessions and skills training groups. Therapists work collaboratively with clients to set goals, track progress, and apply DBT skills in daily life. The ultimate goal of DBT is to help individuals build a life worth living by improving their emotional regulation, interpersonal skills, and overall quality of life.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
A form of psychotherapy that focuses on helping individuals develop psychological flexibility by accepting their thoughts and feelings rather than trying to control or eliminate them. The goal of ACT is to help people create a rich and meaningful life while effectively dealing with the challenges that come their way.
Here's a brief description of how ACT works:
1. **Acceptance**: ACT encourages individuals to accept their thoughts and feelings without judgment. Rather than trying to avoid or suppress negative thoughts and emotions, ACT teaches individuals to acknowledge them and make room for them in their lives.
2. **Cognitive Defusion**: In ACT, individuals learn techniques to distance themselves from their thoughts and see them for what they are - just thoughts, not necessarily reflections of reality. This process, known as cognitive defusion, helps individuals reduce the impact that negative thoughts have on their behavior.
3. **Mindfulness**: Mindfulness techniques are a key component of ACT. By practicing mindfulness, individuals can focus on the present moment without getting caught up in worries about the past or future. This helps to increase awareness and create psychological distance from negative thoughts and emotions.
4. **Values Clarification**: ACT helps individuals clarify their values and identify what is truly important to them. By understanding their values, individuals can make choices that are in line with what matters most to them, even in the presence of difficult thoughts and emotions.
5. **Commitment to Action**: Once individuals have identified their values, ACT encourages them to take committed action towards those values. This involves setting goals and taking steps to live a meaningful and fulfilling life, even in the face of obstacles and discomfort.
Overall, ACT aims to help individuals develop psychological flexibility, which enables them to adapt to life's challenges while staying true to their values and goals. By learning to accept their thoughts and feelings, practicing mindfulness, clarifying their values, and taking committed action, individuals can lead more fulfilling lives and improve their overall well-being.
